As your sheriff, Mike Adkinson, Jr.

Mike will immediately end the mismanagement and
waste of our tax dollars by the Sheriff’s
Office. Mike is no stranger to successfully
managing large budgets and protecting taxpayer
money. His prudent oversight and conservative
fiscal management of the Sheriff’s Office budget
will stop the waste, help hold the line on taxes
and lead to a higher level of service to the
people of Walton County.
Mike will bring professional law
enforcement practices and procedures to the
Walton County Sheriff’s Office, just as he is
doing at the DeFuniak Springs Police Department
as City Marshal. No one is a stronger advocate
for modern policing than Mike Adkinson, Jr.
Under Mike’s leadership -- for the first time in
its history -- the DeFuniak Springs Police
Department will be officially accredited,
complying with more than 250 professional
standards designed specifically for Florida law
enforcement agencies. Mike’s background as a
First Line Supervisor and Field Training Officer
for the Tallahassee Police Department, and a
state-trained accreditation manager, make Mike
the most qualified to lead the Sheriff’s Office
through this same critical transition.
Mike will restructure the
Sheriff’s Office so employees can better do
their jobs and work more efficiently. Providing
improved training opportunities for workers is a
fundamental part of Mike’s plan to improve and
reform the office.
Establishing stability and
improving morale within the agency are among
Mike’s top priorities. Mike strongly believes
employees who are shown respect by their
supervisors, and who are provided with a good
working environment, will perform their jobs
with increased efficiency and treat the public
better. Establishing a standardized hiring,
promotional and disciplinary process, like
Mike
has done as City Marshal in DeFuniak Springs, is
essential for improving our Sheriff’s Office.
Mike will reestablish good
working relationships with other law enforcement
agencies, City of DeFuniak Springs and Board of
County Commissioners, bringing a renewed spirit
of cooperation to the office and putting an end
to the hostilities between the Sheriff’s Office
and other departments and governing bodies.
Working together is essential to improving
services and lowering costs.
Mike will lead efforts to
establish a central communications system for
all Walton County emergency services. As it
stands now, millions of tax dollars are being
unwisely spent on independent emergency
communications systems. What’s even worse is
that Walton County residents, as well as
deputies, police, firefighters and emergency
services personnel, are being endangered by
this.
Mike strongly believes it is
important for our sheriff to be accountable and
available to the public, Sheriff’s Office
employees and news media. As sheriff, Mike will
adopt the same open door policy he has now as
City Marshal, establishing regular office hours
where anyone can walk in and meet with him.
Mike will reopen an office in
DeFuniak Springs to better serve residents.
